FacilityThe Edina Senior Center moved into its current facility at 5280 Grandview Square in 2002. The Senior Center shares a 36,000-square-foot building with the Edina Community Library. Labeled a “cooperative venture that serves as a model for other communities,” the building anchors the Grandview Square redevelopment project that also includes an office building and residential units. It is located on the former Kunz-Lewis site, an area south of Eden Avenue and west of Minnesota Highway 100. Opus Northwest Construction built the Senior Center and library complex and office building. Ron Clark Construction is building the townhouses. The approximately 17,000-square-foot Senior Center on the building’s walkout level is home to one of the most vibrant and growing programs in the City’s Park and Recreation Department. Members of the Senior Center have been working on plans for a facility of their own for more than a decade. The new Senior Center includes a fireside room, food-serving area, five classrooms, billiards room, large gathering area and welcoming lobby. With the additional space, the Senior Center will not only continue current programming, but will add more activities. Plans are in the works for cooperative ventures with Edina Public Schools’ Community Education Program and the Edina Art Center. Officials expect membership to grow with this move. Currently, more than 1,500 seniors participate in exercise classes, organized activities and scheduled activities or receive the monthly newsletter. Many seniors in the community shied away from activities at the old facility because of its third-floor location at the Edina Community Center. For more information on the new Senior Center or to join, contact Director Sue Weigle at 952-833-9570. |
